Spring is here finally! Yes, we had a freezing snow day few days ago in NJ but despite the cold wind, warm and bright sunlight is screaming SPRING! I stopped by Ikea last week to pick up some stuff for the house and it was so crowded! A lot of people were buying palm trees and home decors for spring. Thank god my husband was there to stop me from impulsive plant shopping because I was about the buy their entire plant collection. Green plants make a great home decor and they instantly change the atmosphere of the room. With a relatively low cost, you can have a big impact in your house and also receive air-purifying benefits. In fact, they could even lower your stress level. Studies have shown that hospital patients who have living plants in their rooms reportedly recover quicker and have lower stress levels during their hospital stay.
01. Monstera (Monstera deliciosa)
Yes, monstera (aka Swiss cheese plant) is all over the Instagram and Pinterest. This tropical philodendron beauty is not only gorgeous, it’s relatively low maintenance. Monstera was the first plant I bought for my new house and during the summer time, it grew like a monster! Since it grew many new stems, I cut small stems and put it in a vase with water. The large characteristic splits in the leaves add a great accent to your room.
Basic care: Bright room/indirect sunlight. Moist, well-drained soil. Warm temperature and likes high humidity. Spray the leaves between watering. Water the plant when the top of soil (1 inch from the top) is dried. Reduce watering during the winter, keeping the soil moist but careful not to over water as plants require less water during their natural resting season.

02. Kentia Palm (Howea Forsterana)
This is on my shopping list for this Spring. Kentia Palm Tree adds fresh summer tropical vibe to the room instantly. If you want to make a fresh change to your house for the new season, I highly recommend any type of palm trees. For small space, Sago Palm (Indoor) is recommended. This easy to grow palm with it’s dark green foliage is ideal for that office or home spot that does not get much sun light.
Basic Care: Indirect sunlight, well drained soil, water when the soil is dry, water it less during winter.

03. Pilea Peperomioides (Chinese Money Plant)
This originated from Southern China plant will be the hardest to find compared to other plants on the list. There’s something unique about these round coin shaped leaves. Pilea Peperomioides has been spread among amateur gardeners via cuttings which is why the plant is so hard to find in local shops. You may have better chance finding it online via Etsy or plant community.
Basic Care: Bright room/indirect sunlight. The plant is very responsive to sunlight so rotate the pot weekly to avoid growing slanted.

04. Sansevieria (Snake Plant)
Sanseveria is very popular for their sleek look and easy to care condition. It’s a perfect plant for someone with busy lifestyle or first time plant owner. It could grow with low light and under watering. Don’t underestimate sansevieria for their low maintenance quality. They are one of the best houseplant for air-purifying and eliminating pollutants commonly found in American homes. Basic Care: Water every 2-3 weeks. Water less during Winter. I almost killed my Sansevieria from over watering during winter. It’s currently recovering!

05. Hoya Obovata
This is a great alternative plant for Pilea Peperomioide! This classic tropical indoor plant is easy to find at local shops and low maintenance. Their large, waxy, round, dark green, and lightly speckled leaves are so attractive. It may bloom flowers as well. I need this one in my kitchen plant shelf!
Basic Care: Bright room/indirect light, their big leaves hold a lot of water; wait until it puckers before watering.

07. Calathea Orbifolia
Classic tropical indoor plant that is easy to find. Each olive-green leaf is streaked with wide, silvery-gray lines, creating an exotic pattern on the leaf. The large, rounded leaves can grow to six inches wide and form a large clump. I can’t stop staring at their exotic leaves!
Basic Care: Medium to low light/indirect light, water calathea enough to keep it moist, but not wet or saturated.
